The Lovely Eggs - "Have You Ever Heard The Lovely Eggs?"
It's a real honour for Cherryade to unveil its nineteenth release, "Have You Ever Heard The Lovely Eggs?" by Lancaster's finest, The Lovely Eggs.
Holly and David live in a flat above a jewellery shop in Lancaster in the North West of England. They have recently taken a trip down to Maida Vale to record a session for Huw Stephens on Radio One. Their international radio hit "I Like Birds but I Like Other Animals Too" received airplay by DJs like Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq, Rob Da Bank and Mar Riley (who invited them down to the Six Music studios in Manchester to record a live session for his show). They played their first ever gig in New York City about two years ago and since then have played quite a few other gigs in the UK, USA and Europe, their most bizarre ones having been on an antique steam train in the Midlands and in a scrap yard in Los Angeles. They were recently filmed in New York for www.punkcast.com and another interview done with www.uncensoredinterview.com is live on the site.
Holly used to be in the all-girl indiepop band Angelica, who received extensive airplay on Radio One and widespread critical acclaim with songs like "Teenage Girl Crush," "Why Did You Let My Kitten Die?" and "Bring Back Her Head;" they also recorded a Peel session.
For £4, "Have You Ever Heard The Lovely Eggs?" squeezes a very generous five tracks onto its two sides of yolk-yellow seven-inch vinyl, perfectly capturing the band's eccentric indiepop, riddled with cycle wheels, xylophones, fuzzy guitars and bike horns. It's available to order here, from all good record shops (distributed through Cargo), and from iTunes; to find out more about the band visit their myspace page.
What makes the Lovely Eggs so loveable is their undeniable quirkiness and refusal to adhere to the notional song craft form book, their songs belie an affecting twinkling cuteness that's wrapped in an impishly light headed naivety that partly recalls a less introspective and self examining Daniel Johnston and a sprightly though ostensibly oddball take on the Shaggs - The Sunday Experience Fanzine
This is the kind of band who are inspired by the excellence of the past and the kind of band who will inspire the excellence of the future - Unpeeled
