Larry Pickleman
Biography:
Mertle and Larry Pickleman met, fucked, drank, fought, smoked and then eventually got round to writing and recording under the guise of "the non-plus picklemen" in Newport Wales around the summer of 1996. They wrote at least 50 songs over the next 2 years, and made a few videos too, non of which ever seen the light of day. On one hand, Larry’s Amiga music-x sequencing program, huge collection of Casio Keyboards and cheap drum machines which laid the backdrop to their songs were just way too much hassle for a pair of stoners to try and drag down to a venue. On the other, there was no music scene whatsoever were they felt their music would fit. So instead, they kept fucking, drinking, fighting, smoking and recording new stuff.
8 Years and 2 babies later, Larry and Mertle had relocated to Brighton and through their musical affiliation with the Moldy Peaches stumbled upon the budding London Antifolk scene. At the same time Larry had made a new years resolution that he was going to play live in 2004, and so set up www.antifolk.org and organized Brighton's first ever Antifolk event. Mertle and Larry then transferred their songs to an acoustic format and found themselves perfectly at home among the likes of Milk Kan and the Bobby McGee's.
A year and a half on from that and Mertle dropped another sprog, forcing Larry out on his own. After several failed attempts at working with Drummers, Larry bought a sampler and set about recreating the sounds of the early Picklemen. At last the electro-story machine was portable and was taken on the road for the first time at the Jan 2006 UK Antifolk festival in London. The set went down a storm, and again a month later at antifolk.orgs first event of 2006 receiving rave reviews from Plan B’s Everett True among others. Mertle and Larry continue to write and perform together or apart, acoustic or electric. Larry forever loud and brash, Mertle reserved and poignant. Mertle will be returning to the stage in July 2006, Larry will happily hog it like a wife battering hubby in the meantime.
